2023 Afcon: South Africa coach Hugo Broos reveals player selection criteria

Published on: 06 January 2024

Ahead of the much-anticipated 2023 Afcon in Ivory Coast, South Africa's head coach, Hugo Broos, has pulled back the curtain on the meticulous criteria guiding his player selection.

Broos, known for his tactical prowess, has shattered conventional norms by emphasizing a player's fit into his system over the glamour of club affiliations.

As the Rainbow Nation gears up for one of the continent's premier footballing events, Broos has underscored his commitment to results, making it clear that a player's passport to the national team isn't stamped by the logos of European giants like PSG or Bayern. Instead, it hinges on their ability to seamlessly integrate into his strategic framework and deliver results on the pitch.

"SAFA hired my services without 56 million people involved. They asked me to take the national team forward. They never told me that they also hired other 56 million coaches to coach Bafana Bafana," he said.

"Now people coach to me and ask why did you not pick that player who plays for that club. As long I am here I pick whoever delivers for me. You can play for PSG, Bayern etc, if you not a fit to my system you wont be called up," he added.
