Angola put on a spirited performance on Monday night to draw 1-1 with Algeria in their first match at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The two national teams locked horns at Stade de la Paix in a Group D contest of the 34th edition of the AFCON.

Algeria immediately after kick-off took control of the match and created several chances in succession,

Eventually, in the 18th minute, the North Africans made their dominance count as experienced striker Baghdad Bounedjah scored with a classy finish to give his country the lead.

While the Algerians would continue to dominate, they could not score again and settled for a narrow lead at the break.

The story was the same in the second half but Angola this time around showed more hunger and pushed forward on multiple occasions to get a goal back.

They were successful in the 68th minute when they were awarded a penalty.

Attacker Mabululu converted the spot kick as the Angolans continued to fight to secure a 1-1 draw at full time.

Group D continues on Tuesday when Burkina Faso takes on Mauritania at 2pm.
