2023 Africa Cup of Nations: Ghana vs Cape Verde preview

Published on: 14 January 2024

The Black Stars of Ghana begin their journey in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament on Sunday, January 14.

In a Group B contest, Ghana will come up against Cape Verde in the last of three matches scheduled to be played today.

In the preview to the game, we look at the head-to-head between the national teams of the two countries, the form guide, and provide details of the match including team news.

Form Guide.

The Black Stars of Ghana are heading into today’s game in worrying form. In the last five matches of the West African giants, they have only recorded one victory.

In the four other matches, Ghana lost three and drew one.

On the back of these results, Ghanaians lack the confidence that the Black Stars can compete at the 2023 AFCON.

The situation is not that different when you get to know the form of Cape Verde ahead of the Ghana meeting.

Cape Verde has also lost three times in the last five games, drawing a game, and also winning just once.

Knowing that the Black Stars have lost their aura and no longer bite as they used to, Cape Verde heads into today’s clash full of confidence and knowing that a good fight will see them pick at least a point.

Head-to-Head meetings.

The first time Ghana played Cape Verde was back in 2004. In the contest at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the Black Stars cruised to a delightful 2-0 win.

Since that first meeting, Ghana has played Cape Verde three more times and won all games.

The last meeting was in 2013 when the Black Stars beat Cape Verde 2-0 thanks to a brace from Mubarak Wakaso.

Team news.

Cape Verde unlike Ghana will go into today’s Group B clash with no injury concerns in camp.

The Black Stars on the other hand could miss star man Mohammed Kudus. The attacking midfielder has trained with his Black Stars teammates in the last three days but faces a late fitness test before the game.

Match details.

The match between Ghana and Cape Verde will be played at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.

Kick-off is at 8 pm.
