2023 Africa Cup of Nations: Not concentrating throughout the Cape Verde game cost us - Jordan Ayew

Published on: 17 January 2024

Ghana forward Jordan Ayew says the players not concentrating for more than 90 minutes cost them in the 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations opening game.

A Mohammed Salisu mistake coupled with Richard Ofori’s lack of awareness gave the Island nation through Garry Rodrigues.

Speaking ahead of the match against Egypt on Thursday night, Jordan Ayew explained what went wrong for the team against Cape Verde.

“The first game we didn't concentrate [for] 90+ minutes and that's what cost us the game. The most important thing for us is to come back and stay focused.

“We have to stay aggressive and we'll be fine. I have total belief in the players and staff.”

Egypt as well needed a late Mohamed Salah penalty to hold Mozambique to a 2-2 draw in their opening match too.

That leaves Group B open, with the record winners and Mozambique having one point each behind Cape Verde while Ghana are bottom of the group.

The Black Stars game against the Pharaohs will be played at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan.
