2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers: Thomas Partey to lead Black Stars as skipper for Mali, CAR games

Arsenal star, Thomas Partey will lead the Black Stars as captain into the June international break for important games in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The deputy captain will play the role as the main captain following the omission of captain Andre Ayew in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming games against Mali and Central African Republic.

Speaking on his decision to leave Andre Ayew out of his Black Stars squad, Coach Otto Addo said the door is not shut for the player.

He said the experienced attacker will still have a chance to return to the Black Stars in the future.

“The door is always open for Andre Ayew because we don't know what will happen tomorrow. Never say never,” coach Otto Addo said.

While it is uncertain why Andre Ayew did not earn a place in the Black Stars squad for the games against Mali and Central African Republic, it is certain that Thomas Partey will lead the team as captain in the two important matches.

The World Cup qualification matches against Mali and Central African Republic will be played on June 6 and June 10 respectively.
