The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, says the aim of the maiden Democracy Cup is to re-emphasize the importance of sports in fostering healthy living and friendship.

Parliament has selected Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko to contest the game on July 5 at the Accra Sports Stadium as part of activities marking the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth Republic.

Speaking after the launch of the Democracy Cup in parliament on Thursday, Bagbin said they want to start it off with a bang that’s why Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko were selected.

“Let me use this opportunity to thank the two teams. Yes, this is a curtain raiser. We'll definitely be moving to other teams. But we have to start with a big bang.

“And that is why we settled on Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak for agreeing to contest and to via for this prestigious Democracy Cup," Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin said.

“This event should be an opportunity to re-emphasize the importance of sports in promoting healthy living and fostering friendship and unity.”
