Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak have announced the passing of fan William Nii Laryea during their 2024 Homowo Cup clash against Heart of Lions on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The club has expressed its condolences but did not provide details about the cause of Laryea's death. In a statement, Hearts of Oak said: “With heavy hearts, we express our sincere condolences to the family of William Nii Laryea, who tragically passed away yesterday at the Accra Sports Stadium.”
The club added, “Nii Laryea was a very passionate fan who consistently supported us, both home and away. His loss is deeply felt by both his family and the club.”
Hearts of Oak also pledged to work with Laryea's family to support the final funeral rites and offered their heartfelt sympathy:
“May the Almighty grant him a lasting resting place, and we hope the Almighty God will continue to guide and protect his family in these difficult times.”
In the match itself, Hearts of Oak defeated Heart of Lions 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
