I’m not surprised Samartex won the Ghana Premier League - Wilson Arthur

The chairman of the MTN FA Management Committee, Wilson Arthur, has expressed his lack of surprise at FC Samartex 1996's Ghana Premier League title win.

The Samreboi-based wrapped up the title with two games to spare on Sunday afternoon after beating Bibiani Gold Stars 1-0.

FC Samartex's league triumph follows the success of Medeama SC, another team affiliated with the Western Regional Association, who clinched the league title in the 2022/2023 season.

Arthur, who also the owner of Division One club Skyy FC, attributed Samartex's victory to the abundance of talent in the Western part of Ghana.

He pointed out that during the time when the Black Stars were achieving honors and dominating African football, a significant number of players hailed from this region.

“It’s a reflection of the quality of materials that we have in this part of Ghana. If you take your mind back, anytime the Black Stars were winning honours, conquering Africa, it was on the back of five, six, seven players from the Western part of Ghana you don’t see that now. What is happening now is a resurgence of Western soccer talents.

“Samartex has not surprised me. It’s a very well structured, the investment is right. They are running a modern football club and I’m not surprised at the quality and the performance we are seeing.”

As the 2023-2024 Ghana Premier League season draws to a close, Samartex will face Karela United and Accra Lions in their final matches.
