Chiedozie Ogbene has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifier against the Netherlands.

The Luton Town striker, 26, will miss the game at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam with an ankle injury and has also been nursing a tight hamstring.

"Unfortunately, Chiedozie Ogbene is out," said Republic manager Stephen Kenny. "It's an ankle injury, really, that has ruled him out."

But Brighton forward Evan Ferguson is available despite a back problem.

Kenny added on Ogbene: "He hasn't been able to train this week - he hasn't trained at all.

"He hasn't been able to put his foot in a boot properly.

"Also he had a hamstring [injury] which forced him to come off late against Liverpool. He played against Manchester United last week, but he didn't feel he could sprint fully and he's been anxious about that as well."

Kenny, though, will be boosted by the availability of 19-year-old Brighton striker Ferguson for Saturday's tough test.

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman, though, has revealed he has inside knowledge of Ferguson thanks to tips from his Brighton team-mate and Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen.

Koeman also watched the Republic frontman in person in the Seagulls' recent 2-0 Europa League win over Ajax.

"We know he's a good striker," he added. "We've got good information from our goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen about him.

"I watched him last week when he came in against Ajax and he's a good one. He's a young one, he's a goalscorer and we have to defend well because he's a good striker."

Ferguson missed September's 2-1 defeat by the second-placed Netherlands at the Aviva Stadium, one of five losses during a difficult campaign for Kenny's charges.

The six points they have accumulated to date have come courtesy of two wins over Group B minnows Gibraltar.

The game looks likely to be the penultimate fixture of Kenny's reign, with his contract set to expire after Tuesday's friendly with New Zealand in Dublin and an expectancy that it will not be renewed.

His tenure to date has yielded just six wins in 28 competitive encounters.

"It's a fantastic game against Holland," added Kenny. "In the history of Irish football, all the great Irish teams of the past, some legendary players, it's been elusive, the number of big away victories in that period.

"Obviously there have been victories in tournaments, but in terms of qualifiers, beating the major countries has proved elusive, even for the best teams.

"For us it's a massive challenge to play Holland on the night they can qualify in Amsterdam. It's a huge, huge challenge and one we must embrace and be positive about."

The Dutch need victory over either the Republic, or Gibraltar on Tuesday night, to clinch qualification alongside group leaders France who are already assured of their place at next summer's finals.

When asked if that would be cause for celebration, former Everton boss Koeman said: "Well, when we got this draw for this group, I knew straight away that it would be difficult. Compared to some other pools, this one is a lot heavier.

"If we make it, we will have done what we are obliged to do, but especially with Ireland away and Greece away, there was the pressure that we had to do it.

"I think that's great, considering the injuries we had back then. If you look at the qualities of the countries, we should qualify, but partying? No, not really. We will if we win the European Championship."

Koeman's defensive options have been limited by the absence of injured players Lutsharel Geertruida, Jeremie Frimpong, Matthijs de Ligt, Nathan Ake, Micky van de Ven and Sven Botman.

Full-back Denzel Dumfries is in line to win his 50th senior cap if he is selected.
