‘Players walk instead of running when defending’ – Sundowns coach analyses Ghana’s defeat to Cape Verde

Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Brilliant Manqoba Ferrimant has cited poor defending in the play of the Black Stars as the cause of Ghana’s defeat to Cape Verde.

Ghana’s Black Stars in their opening game at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament lost 2-1 after conceding a late goal after a disastrous defending.

Speaking after the game, Coach Brilliant Manqoba Ferrimant criticised the defense of Ghana, arguing that players tend to walk instead of running to defend.

"That's why we need to understand that playing in Europe doesn't mean you better than the others, Ghana has players that are playing in top leagues in Europe but can't deal with situations like this.

"You see a Ghana player walking instead of running and come to defend,” Coach Brilliant Manqoba Ferrimant bemoaned.

The Mamelodi Sundowns coach continued, “You can't look at Ofori only. There are some players who also think they are at a better level because they playing in Europe, so they won't work hard. Then why don't you stay at home and let those who are hungry to play.”

After the defeat to Cape Verde, the Black Stars are now preparing for their second Group B game against Egypt on Thursday, January 18.
