We wanted to repeat 2010 World Cup success in Brazil – Kwesi Appiah opens up

Former Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah says they were mentally and physically ready to replicate the success they achieved in South Africa in Brazil.

The four-time African champions, who were making their second appearance in Mundial in South Africa in 2010 made history by playing in the quarterfinals after an impressive performance in Germany in 2006 where they played in the Round of 16.

However, Appiah’s side suffered an elimination from the group phase with just a point after three games.

He attributed the team’s early exit to fine margins that often define success at the World Cup.

"Ghana wanted a repeat of 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals, and we were physically and mentally ready for the 2014 edition," he told FIFA Media.

"However, it came down to small details and we didn’t go as far as we’d hoped (the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage)," he added.

Kwesi Appiah was sacked after the Black Stars' early elimination from the Mundial.
