2023 Afcon: Senegal is one of the favorites; we have a great team - Souleymane Diawara

Published on: 11 January 2024

Former Senegal international Souleymane Diawara has boldly asserted that the Lions of Teranga are not just contenders but stand tall as one of the favorites in the tournament.

Diawara, renowned for his defensive prowess on the field, shared his insights on Senegal's prospects, exhibiting confidence in the team's potential to clinch a historic double in Ivory Coast.

Diawara delved into a comprehensive analysis, shedding light on the strengths and strategic advantages that position Senegal as a force to be reckoned with in Afcon 2023.

“I think Senegal is one of the favorites, it’s logical, they remain the defending champions. We have a great team with a large squad. But as we have regularly said in recent years, there is this famous curse: since Egypt's treble, no nation has managed to win the African Cup of Nations twice in a row. I hope they will be the first to break this negative streak! I see Senegal clearly," he said.

“I think Morocco is capable of coming and playing spoilsport. They had a great run at the World Cup and they have a great group capable of doing great things. I also have an outsider that few people talk about: Guinea. They are in a tough group with Senegal, Cameroon and Gambia, but they can be the outsiders!,” he added.
